From widely acclaimed Maine lesbian feminist playwright Carolyn Gage comes the explosive feminist classic about teenage, runaway, lesbian Joan of Arc, returning from the dead to share with contemporary audiences her harrowing experiences and passionate, radical perspective. Boston actor Julia Reddy brings Carolyn Gage’s Joan to life in a performance that has been called a "girl power epic.”
This electrifying play provokes, challenges, and inspires, and is at least as relevant in today’s turbulent times as it was in the late 1980s when it crashed onto the scene with a first-class production in Brazil, where it was the top-selling commercial show in Rio and São Paolo, and toured a dozen cities. It is currently in development for first-class production in Rome, and a Mandarin translation is making the rounds in Beijing in secret underground productions, for which the producer risks incarceration. The play won “pick of the festival” at last year’s Capitol Fringe in DC.
Some of the most famous activists and feminist writers in the world have endorsed this play, incuding Andrea Dworkin, Phyllis Chesler, Jewelle Gomez, and John Stoltenberg. It has been featured at international festivals, taught widely in Gender and Women’s Studies departments, and toured with great success for twenty-two years. It is the title work of an anthology that won the Lambda Literary Award in Drama.
